Kreative Karlita!!!! #DIY PartAyy Hats!
Its my dog Jake’s birthday today. He is 13 years young and as cranky as ever. I love that crotcehty old man like no other.

| Store bought pink hat Anyway….I had the pink hat pictured for Lola but nothing special for Jake. I actually just wanted an instagram photo of him in a hat because I am certifiable. SO I stopped by a few stores (petco, kids stores, party stores etc etc) after work and could not find a decent boys party hat. Now….you may think white feathers and rhinestones aren’t very BOYISH but Jake is in touch with his fem side and likes that stuff so HUSH. |
SO…… One party store hat these simple cardboard balloon printed cone hats that you generally see at kids parties. Decent…but NOT good enough. I needed to go over the edge with the madness as usual. So the costume designer in me busted out my fabric glue, costume box and got creative.
Whoot Whoot!
Spice up those Bday hats people! Make it sassy and fun and original. It is actually a terrific project to do wth kids either during the party or before to get them psyched up for the event! They can be custom made and couture…Oh so fancy!
You will need:
1. Paper Hat
2. Boa
3. Stapler or glue (hotglue gun ONLY if you are an adult damnit!)
4. Ribbon
5. Scissors (again with adult supervision- preferably a sober one)
6. Rhinestones or Glitter or Diamonds and Rubys if you are rich
7. Tape.
Attach boa to the bottom of the outside of the hat like this. You can attach with a stapler or with glue….totally your preference.
Then cut the end. IF the staples have jagged edges inside it can hurt your FINGERS> WARNING WARNING!!!!!! put some small pieces of tape over them so as not to create an emergency.
Next pull some ribbon through the end of the cone. Do this with as many pieces as you like. Cut the end of the ribbon hanging out the top on an angle so it looks finished and tie knots on the other end inside the cone so that it stays put. I stapled my ribbon knots together inside the cone so they would stay together better. (I’m showing the pic without the fur along the bottom so it was easier to see)
NEXT IS BLINGY TIME! Yay…..Use the fabric/gem glue to attach the rhinestones or loose glitter. Get creative! You can write names on your hats…..draw cats….polka dots..whatever you please. Got it? Feel free to add other stuff like….lace, fringe, fake teeth, boogers….whatever floats your boat.
Now I got a bit fancy and ripped off the end of a pen that I had and attached it to the top of my party hat. I took the green ball off of the pen along with the green fuzz and glue it to the tippy top of my cone.

GREAT for Pups….as long as you monitor them. DO NOT leave the animals alone with a damn hat on. GEEZ. That goes for kids too. I don’t have kids so I can’t show how adorbs they’d look but here’s ME!

Above I have on silver and black elastic bracelets from my fav store Fox’s in Mineola, NY. They have gold grommet beads on them. Then I added 3 vintage gold bangles… 2- real 1- fake. SPOT THE FAKEY!

I also added some smaller elastic beaded bracelets….one gold and one black. The cherry on top…..drum roll please….vintage gold wedding bands!

Flea Market Finds!!!!
I have ALWAYS been obsessed with flea markets. I can never enter one without buying something, anything. And if I do I ALWAYS regret not buying it for days and days.
TWO HUGE SCORES this weekend. I went looking for an outdoor chandelier and furniture to restore…and left with stuff for ME! As usual. Precisely why they call me ‘Greedy Guts’.Thank goodness I came to my senses and haggled a bit with the woman selling the gorgeous hibiscus (i think) ankle grazing, short sleeve dress below. I walked away when she said 30 bucks. Then I asked her to drop it to 20, she refused. Then I walked away again. Then I hemmed and hawed and couldn’t leave the place so distraught I didn’t just ‘GO FOR IT’. So….my honey convinced me to go back and buy it for the 25. I walked back with my tail between my legs that I didn’t get it for the 20 I wanted but soon perked up when it was MINE…ALL MINE!

Dress is probably circa 1980s from what I can tell of the cut. I hand washed it as soon as I got home and let it dry in the sun- NO WAY I am dry cleaning a rayon dress I just got for 25 bucks. Kind of defeats the bargain purpose now doesn’t it? Pair it with sandals or even a simple pretty flip flop and a sun hat for summer days. For night rock an edgy stiletto heel with a plain belt and a clutch. (giant fake lashes ALWAYS recommended) Simple, easy, sassy style! Great for vacations, a lunch date, Bloody Mary brunch, work, or even a date with your honeybooboo. I always prefer classic and classy over trampy. I find the more demure pieces can be very sexy with the right styling and a great, fierce lady confidence.
Now, the Melrose Trading Post where I got the gems we speak of today has kind of morphed into a Hipster Heaven. Its super annoying because they kinda ruined it. Years ago I could go in there and get stuff for WAY cheaper. It’s WAY expensive now, unfortunately. This flea market is a great one but kind of sceney now and super Hollywood. (good for celeb sitings actually.) I saw SincerelyJules (famous fashion blogger) and was totes star struck!
Moving on…..RHINESTONES! I spotted this little beauty at a small booth. The lady totally reeled me in because as I briskly and aggressively walked over to the table. She saw the sparkle in my eyes upon my approach like a lioness stalking an antelope (sorta). She knew what I was gunnin’ for…and milked it. She sold me with one line….”Ohhh a young woman was just eyeing that. She said she would be right back.” Now, MORAL dilemma here…. I felt totally guilty and torn that someone else wanted it and I was about to crush said stranger’s Sunday Funday BUT MOVE YOUR FEET LOSE YOUR SEAT!!!! Once again, MINE all MINE. I was quickly cured of the guilt when I placed this beauty on my person. 10 BUCKS> I didn’t even bother talking her down.
I like to pair these little sparkly pieces of heaven with lots of other jewelry. It somehow makes it way more casual and adds a “cool” factor! LAYER! LAYER LAYER!
Make sure there are no stones missing and that the clasp works on these older items. Then, HAVE FUN with them!
SUPER cute with jeans and a t shirt….or a flowing sundress and long gold chain dipping into your cleavage (or lack thereof in my case).

My 3 absolute favorite lip colors! @nyxcosmetics makes these soft matte lip creams. I wear them on camera every day for work and out on the town at night. I am not going to attempt to post the horrendous photos I tried to take of myself putting the spin pin in….best I could do it the instagram viddy below with some screen grabs to help.
PRESENTING>>>> The SPIN PIN….
1- wrap your hair in a messy bun at the back or side of your neck.
2- Hold in place with one hand while you place the first pin in position….and SPIN>…like the sit and spin when you were a kid (for us OLD people). EVEN more fun though.
3. Place the second pin at the opposite end of the bun from where you put the initial pin. I always start with first on top….then work on the bottom. (no sexual correlation)
AND BAM MOFOS!!!! You gots yourselves a sexy, messy, sloppy but sweet Beachy little bun.
PLAY a bit with bun placement. They hold really tight if your hair is thick so if you have thin hair tease that shizz up a bit.
